Welcome to The Atelier

Meet our Atelieristas

Emmi Smid

Picture book author and illustrator

I’m an illustrator & author of picture books and I’m part of Fabula Collective, a group of international artists who explore the art and design of storytelling through media such as illustration, graphic design, textile design, film, 3D etc. www.fabulacollective.com

I believes that picture books are the perfect vehicle to introduce young children to difficult, profound topics, without feeling like they are being lectured to. Therefore, I focus on designing picture books that tackle social taboos and highlight current global topics.

In this space we can see the unique creativity of each child

Inspired by Reggio Emilia's enquiry based approach to children's learning we have our Atelier (Art Studio),

a dedicated space with high quality materials for children to explore through a range of creative media.

We believe that children have hundreds of ways of expressing

themselves and endless

possibilities through

imagination and

wonder...

Annabelle Mellor

I’m an Atelierista at Pumpkin Patch Hove and an illustrator and animator. I love collaborating and exploring with the children, and encouraging them to find their own voices. I’m always inspired by their endless capacity for discovery, imagination and humour.

Catherine Grimaldi

I am a Brighton based artist who has been working with early years children for the last 18 years. I trained at Central St Martins in textiles
and illustration, and have three published children's books, most recently Mr Coconut.

My belief is that all the children are full of potential when they come to nursery and it is our role, along with parents and educators to unearth their own unique language.

I often provide provocations such as dinosaur bones, puppets, collections of natural objects and engineered artefacts such as bicycle wheels and typewriters to ignite childrens imaginations and generate an inquiry.

I have visited the Reggio Emilia twice to attend the International
Study tour.
